I’m pretty sure I told you guys my story, right? How I got my BBA in Marketing back in 2003, overheard someone say during graduation that they were going to go to FIT (Fashion Institute of Technology), I totally piggybacked off that eavesdrop, attended FIT, got a certificate in Image Consulting, taught myself how to do makeup, did a couple of shoots and weddings, started this blog, and got other writing gigs all while working full time in finance? And how every other day it felt like I kept saying to myself that I’d be ready to venture out on my own in a year and then that year became two years then five years and then…well, ya know?
So back in October 2010, I came back from a three-day weekend for Columbus Day and had a total a-ha moment (Oprah would have been so proud). I said to myself “Self, you keep saying wait until next year to pursue makeup and writing you know you’ll blink and be retiring from this bank, right?“. Not that anything at all was wrong with working for the bank—I learned SO MUCH about business and how to deal with so many different personalities from my years there plus it paid well. But I just felt my calling was in fashion and beauty. So I typed up a resignation letter and printed it out. It took me ALL week to finally work up the courage to give it to my boss, but when I finally did he said something no other boss I’ve ever had said to me. He smiled and said “I see you doing fashion anyway and I think you will do well. You need to do what makes you happy”.
HE GETS ME!
So while I’m not Anna Wintour (or barely the person who picks out her Louboutins), I do enoy doing what I do. I love maintaining this site and helping you guys out with your fashion and beauty questions, I love making a bride look her best for her wedding, I love being able to help a woman make sense of her closet and pick out clothing that makes her feel special. So glad I did this. I wouldn’t change anything.
Plus sometimes I get to do cool stuff like film this video with Jeep! A few other fellow fashion bloggers and I got a chance to drive around NYC in the new 2011 Jeep Compass while discussing what keeps us driven. I could have really chosen some better outfits because I totally didn’t dress for my body in some of these (and then the camera adds poundage) but the experience of this. It was sooo much fun and I got to meet some cool new people which is like always the icing on the cake.
Great, now I want cake. *sigh*
Anyway, check out the vid.
