Skincare Treatments and Procedures to Consider in Your 40s

We talked about skincare treatments and procedures to consider in your 30s, so now it’s all about the 40s!

Again, I spoke with Dr. Marguerite A. Germain, M.D., F.A.A.D.of Germain Dermatology.

Here’s what she had to say…

Women in their 40s lose more collagen and elastic fibers, so more wrinkles. The face begins to fall and some pre-jowling may occur. The skin continues to get ruddy, blotchy, and uneven. The under eyes darken and sink. The skin becomes thin, dull, and dry. Rosacea worsens. Adult acne may get worse with perimenopause especially in the T-zone and around the mouth.

Things to do in the 40s…

* Fillers like Restylane around and under the eyes. Thicker fillers like Perlane around the mouth and in the nasolabial folds (smile lines). You may need a little filler in the corners of her mouth if it’s starting to go down at the edges (no need to look sad when you’re not). You may need a little Perlane in your cheeks to give her back those beautiful sweeping cheekbones of youth and to lift the face. May need some Restylane or Perlane along the jawline to restore youthful sharpness. Definitely look into getting Dysport around and between the eyes and in the forehead. With just a little Dysport and filler, I think a person can look at least 10 years younger than their age in just minutes!

* Creamy glycolic acid washes or creamy gentle washes are needed as the skin is slightly drier. Retinoids or retinols are even more important in your 40s. Anti-oxidant moisturizers (which are a bit thicker and more moisturizing) and sunscreens are very important, too. May want to consider some fading creams that have hydroquinone, kojic acid, arbutin, and bearberry to lighten and even out the skin tone.

* May need to use some laser for the redness and broken blood vessels of rosacea. Like the V-Beam (595nm laser).

* May want to consider a rejuvenating laser treatment like the Fraxel Dual to even the skin texture and tone.

* May need to do some light peels and/or microdermabrasion on a somewhat regular basis to augment the good effects of skincare products.
