The point of the matter is, if your SPF isn’t comfortable to wear, chances are you won’t wear it. I mean, we’re beauty fiends—none of us are going to want to walk around with iridescent ashy skin even for the sake of protecting our skin from the sun’s harmful UVA/UVB rays.
So I put up my 8 Sunscreens That Won’t Make You Ashy back in 2011 and recently Neutrogena sent over a selection of their SPF products for me to try out and I’m super happy to report that a total of NONE of them are greasy or ash-inducing. *cartwheels*
But let’s first go over a few of my proper sun care tips.
*It takes about 15-30 minutes for your sunscreen to “activate” so make sure you put it on in an advance of going out in the sun
*SPF (sun protection factor) does not double as the numbers go higher…so an SPF 30 is not double a 15. You want an SPF of at least 30 which filters out about 97% of the sun’s rays. SPF 15 filters out about 93% of the sun’s rays.
*You want your sunscreen to be broad spectrum which means protection against both UVA and UVB rays.
*You also want to make sure you reapply your sunscreen at least every two hours and after you get in the water and towel off.
*Though beauty stories about sunscreen typically come up in summer since we tend to spend most of our time outdoors in warmer months, you want to wear SPF year-round and also indoors if you come in contact with sunlight as it can penetrate windows, too.
And now let’s learn more about the products Neutrogena sent over. They literally have a product for you and your family for every sun situation.
The brand is adamant about sun care especially since UV exposure is the highest now than it’s ever been. In fact at Neutrogena’s recent Sun Summit, Dr. Drew Shindell, Scientist at the NASA Goddard Institute for Space Studies shared: “The brightness of the sun has increased, while the ozone layer has been depleted. So climate change has led to warmer temperatures, which means Spring comes earlier and Fall lasts longer, and people are outside more. Due to the combination of these environmental and lifestyle changes, current risk of UV is higher than it’s been ever before.”
Neutrogena® Clear Face Sunscreen is specially designed to provide superior sun protection without causing breakouts on acne-prone skin. *Broad Spectrum UVA/UVB
*Non-comedogenic (won’t cause breakouts)
*Oil-free
*Fragrance free
*Water-resistant (80 minutes)
I loved how this is super lightweight and sinks rights into the skin so there’s no residue and my skin didn’t feel greasy nor did it get irritated.
Sensitive Skin Sunscreen Lotion SPF 60+ provides superior physical broad-spectrum UVA/UVB protection. It goes on evenly, rubs in on skin, and feels ultra light.

I don’t particularly have sensitive skin, but loved how easily this sinks into the skin again without being ashy or greasy.
Neutrogena® Pure & Free® Baby Sunscreeen Lotion SPF 60+ provides superior broad-spectrum UVA/UVB protection with Purescreen, a physical Sunscreen that creates a barrier between baby’s skin and the sun to provide broad spectrum UVA/UVB protection. OK, so kinda obvious that I’m not a baby and I also don’t have one, but this one is formulated to protect against the sun and has naturally sourced ingredients. It also absorbs easily into the skin without residue.
Neutrogena® Ultra Sheer® Body Mist Sunscreen provides broad-spectrum UV protection in an ultra light sheer mist. Stabilized with Helioplex® Technology, it provides superior balanced broad-spectrum protection against UVA-aging and UVB-burning rays in an ultra-light, non-greasy finish. Wet Skin Kids Sunscreen Lotion SPF 45+ provides full strength protection even on wet skin. *Oil-free
*PABA-free

So I’m far from being pool or beachside so I did the next best thing—I went in my bathroom and splashed some water over my legs to test out Wet Skin…lol. It actually does seem to penetrate the skin well even with all the water I drenched my legs (and bathroom) with.
Neutrogena® Beach Defense™ Sunscreen Lotion provides superior skin protection from harsh summer elements, clinically proven to help defend the signs of sun damage.
Beach Defense™ Sunscreen Lotion provides beach strength broad spectrum UVA/UVB sun protection in a lightweight, fast absorbing formula, ideal for outdoor skin protection of the active family.
*Water resistant (80 minutes)
*Lightweight, fast absorbing
*Oil free, PABA free
So each sunscreen has its specific usage, but I have to say I’m taking to Beach Defense quite well because although all of the sunscreens listed all absorb well without being greasy and ashy, they still have that “sunscreen smell.” Beach Defense has a really nice and light pleasant smell that isn’t at all like sunscreen. I also have to say that the bright yellow packaging also draws me in…lol.
