So say you have straight, relaxed, or transitioning hair and it’s after 5 and you’re heading out for drinks but want to do something with your hair but it needs to be quick. And for instance you want to add a little texture for an effortlessly sexy 70s playmate sort of vibe—boy do I have two tricks for you. While backstage before Tracy Reese’s FW 2014 show, I spied the Ouidad team doing two really cool tricks to add texture to sleek tresses.

Trick numero uno:

If you want to get that sexy, lived-in hair with some slightly tousled waves, you can get it in a jiffy by twisting the hair and then using a flat iron to set it. You can twist the twist into a bantu knot and secure with hairpins as you make your way around your head and then undo them with your fingers if you want a little extra hold.

Trick numero dos:

If you want a highly textured look—like think Beyoncé in the 70s scene of Dreamgirls, try this. Take a small section of hair and gently twist it almost like you’re turning a lock and then take the hair pin and weave the loose hair around it in a figure eight motion until the hair is completely wrapped around the pin (you can see this demoed in a longer video here). Then use a flat iron to set it and finger comb to style.

As for the rest of the beauty, makeup was keyed by Mally Roncal for Mally Beauty. I spotted metallic eyes and deep lips. The nail look was created by Luxe by Tracy Lee for Sally Hansen and featured textured metallic tips.

And then I chatted with Jason from the Ouidad team and asked him his product picks for those of us with tightly curled and kinky hair. He loves Whipped Curls which is a styling primer which fills in the cuticle so that when you put your gel or styling cream on, it’ll really showcase your curl pattern. It’s from the Ouidad Curl Recovery line :)

These are pretty cool tricks! However, my hair is natural and I refuse to put ANY heat on my hair, not even a blow dryer. With that being said, the second tip with the hair pin would be pretty cool to try after I wash my hair. Instead of doing braids or twists, I wonder how it would turn out. I’m going to try it!

Sidenote, that woman’s smile is absolutely radiant!

      Hey Taryn Nicole!

Yeah—they used heat as a quick way to get it due to timing. But I think the hair pin trick might work if you wrap sections of your hair around the pin with a teeny bit of your fave holding product and water and then let it air dry. It might take a few hours or even overnight to “set” but it might be a really cool look. If you try it, let me know the outcome!

      OMG her smile is EVERYTHING!!!
