What I Wore in Grenada + Why You Should Pack Very Little

So initially I started out with VERY little clothes packed (okay—very little for me) for Grenada and then at the last second I threw mad extra shorts and tops in my suitcase “just in case.” This trip was a bit challenging to pack for because I did two weeks in Georgia with my family and then headed straight to Grenada from Atlanta so I had to pack for both winter and summer since I’d essentially be out of NYC for four weeks. Going to ATL from NYC wasn’t so bad because I got a good deal on a first class flight that allowed me to check three bags for free (had to bring stuff for the family in an extra bag), but going from ATL to Grenada and then Grenada to NYC due to new pricing on checked baggage from destinations in some parts of the Caribbean, your first checked bag is already $25. Gone are the days where your first bag at least was free on an international flight depending on your destination. I find this to be very annoying because as anyone of Caribbean descent knows, outside of what you send in a barrel, you typically go back home with PLENTY in your grip (suitcase)…lol.

My Flight 001 bag is SUPER essential for travel

I also feel like checked baggage fees are such a rip-off. Well not a rip-off—maybe that’s too harsh of a term, but I could spend that $50 on something like an eyeshadow palette I don’t need…lol.

But one of the main reasons you should pack very little when you go to a magical place like Grenada is that there is SO much goodness to bring home with you. I bought a ton of rum when we visited the Clarke’s Court distillery but now that I’m looking at my still unopened supply, I’m having anxiety of not having enough…lol. If I had some extra space in my luggage, I could have at least gotten maybe two full bottles of Planter’s Punch (my new favorite—it’s a blend of the brand’s rum plus tropical juices). Also there’s must-haves like Grenadian chocolate (so rich and full of antioxidants) and of course the spices the island nation is known for such as nutmeg, allspice, clove, tumeric, and many more. I’m sure even the most obsessed fashionista can agree that those things totally trump bringing an extra pair of shoes ;)

So I would suggest doing a capsule wardrobe that contains items you love to wear. I was there for 10 days and wore two pairs of denim shorts, two pairs of “dressy” shorts for going out, maybe 3-4 tanks and tees, three bathing suits (two I liked the most so I wore them most often), my NYE dress, and I had an extra dress that I wore to dinner one night and that was plenty of clothes (thank goodness for laundry). I’ll never again bring heels with me (I don’t wear them to Soca parties here in NYC, why I brought them to Grenada is beyond me) and will instead opt for something like a gladiator sandal. Then I had a pair of flip flops for the beach and a pair of really great sandals from Ipanema that work well on the beach and also as walking shoes and then a pair of sneakers that I traveled in. When it came to accessories I only wore one pair of earrings and my leather Coach bracelet—all the other few accessories I brought along never even saw the light of day…lol.

But yes, pack light. I’m not bothered by repeating outfits at all (no matter how many times my mom tells me stop posting pics in stuff I’ve worn a gazillion times…lol) and would rather do that on vacation than have to sacrifice bringing home a good bottle of rum. My dream is to one day fit all my belongings in a carry-on bag and then bring an extra empty suitcase so I can bring home all my goods (as long as customs doesn’t tell me I can’t…lol).

Here’s a look at some things I wore (and re-wore…lol) in Grenada:

I seriously wore these shorts almost everywhere and then rotated my tees…lol. I did have another pair of denim shorts that I rotated but they didn’t get as much photo love as these did. Being able to do laundry while on vacation is such a blessing. I also carried two pairs of dressier shorts but don’t have any photos to share…lol.

I definitely agree with packing light when going on vacation and have mastered this technique over the years. I usually use the same technique of bringing a few pairs of bottoms and just rotating them with different shirts.

      Hi Aurelie!

That’s exactly where I got it from—I have no other way to help–sorry :( It’s probably sold out.

You can find tons of kimonos at stores like ASOS though: http://rstyle.me/n/24pych9pe
