Listen, after spending the time curling my hair and getting it to look all voluminous and glam, one of the things that pains me the most is going to bed and possibly reversing all my hard work. GRRRR. There’s been times where I thought pushing all the curls into a bonnet would be sufficient and then I get up in the morning and I’m looking like Sideshow Bob’s sister. SMH. But finally I figured out the best way to help preserve my style while I’m deep in REM sleep, leaving me with little to no primping come morning.

So the thing with wearing weave is yes, perhaps it is less “fuss” in your routine but you still have to maintain it or it can get to bird’s nest level really fast. REALLY fast. Weave is not always going to be a get up and go situation—there is some work required. Unless of course you actually want to spend unnecessary time coaxing tangles and matting out of your hair.
As you know I’ve been working with Sally Beauty to bring you budget-friendly beauty tutorials. This month it’s all about hair—and I had a ball shopping for items for this tutorial. There are so many multicultural hair essentials at Sally’s.
Here’s how I preserve my hairstyle for bed…
Step One:
Gently brush the curls out using a boar bristle brush. Here I’m using the Beautique Premium Boar Nylon Cushion Brush (it was also featured on Project Runway).
This prevents tangles and matting while giving the hair a smooth, frizz-free finish.
Step Two:
Section the hair into two large twists. The twists help to preserve the curl/wave in the hair as well as prevent tangling and matting.
After twisting I then wrap the twists into two little buns Princess Leia-style. This helps to “set” the curl/wave as you get your beauty sleep.
I secured them with ouch-less hair elastics like the DCN Hair Elastics.
Step Three:
I smooth down my edges and add a little Design Essentials Natural Honey and Shea Edge Tamer. It keeps them in check without getting hard and flaky.
Then I smooth them down with the Brush Strokes Wood Club Brush.
Step Four:
I like to add a little moisture—particularly the hair left out. I spritz a little Carol’s Daughter Black Vanilla Moisture and Shine Leave-In Conditioner and massage it into my hair.
Step Five:
I love a satin scarf for not only keeping my edges in check, but also keeping my style smooth and in place. Here I’m using Stay On Satin Natural Style Black Wrapping Scarf.
Step Six:
For added protection and to make sure my twists don’t get flattened by the satin scarf, I also put this Proclaim Style It Up Large Satin Bonnet on.
Another option is sleeping on a Betty Dain White Satin Pillow Case #121. Satin pillowcases are not only great for preserving your style and eliminating dryness and promoting moisture, but they’re also said to be a great addition to your anti-aging skincare routine.
And that’s that! Nighty night :)
In the morning I just undo the twists and finger comb. If I want a little more glam I just add a few curls with my One ‘N Only Argan Heat Curling Iron 1″.

Hey Danielle, I remember you saying in a post from the recent past that you’d do a review on your closure; any plans on still doing that?

Hi Natasha!
I will—soon hopefully. I’m backed up on blog posts…lol.
I do this all the time when I wear extensions. It really works! I think I need to try that leave in spray and gel though. I’m in desperate need of a new leave in and you can never have too much edge products lol
