There are many things that plot to destroy our skin: UV rays, free radicals, pollution, our bosses (lol), etc. And there’s another big one coming—actually it’s already here but will just get more intense as the new season develops: DRYNESS. I can’t even begin to tell you how much the dryness that comes with NYC winter affects me. And what’s worse is the combination of being out in the ice cold and then coming back inside to artificial heat. It’s like you look up “Sahara Dessert” and there’s a graph of my skin pictured next to it. And don’t even get me started on hair. Not only is the temperature change pretty harsh for our hair, but all the things we need to do to keep the rest of us warm can have a negative effect on our already on the dry-side tresses, too. Think about it. Your hair could be rubbing up against the wool collar of your coat causing friction and added dryness. That super cute hat you bought to look stylish while braving the elements can be snatching your edges and causing other breakage. It’s like if it weren’t for the holiday season, winter would just be an all-around mean old bully.
But of course there are ways to protect our beloved skin and hair from the elements. Obviously moisturizing properly and regularly is key. Making sure you protect your hair from the breakage that can come from wool and cotton by using a silk or satin scarf as a buffer is another. But recently I’ve added another device to help support hydrated skin and hair not only during this cold and dry time of year, but year-round: the Dyson Humidifier. We all know how holy grail and state of the art a Dyson vacuum is so I just KNEW I was in for something good in trying out the Dyson Humidifier.
I’ve used humidifiers all throughout my childhood and into my grown-up years because my skin can get SUPER dry and itchy, but I always felt like I needed to be right next to the humidifier to really get the benefits. Dyson’s Multiplier™ technology ensures that all of the hygienic mist is distributed evenly through the room so I can be Netflix-and-chilling in one corner of the room with the Dyson Humidifier in the other and STILL reap the benefits….lol.
Since I work from home I find benefits in using this both day and night and can also see this being very useful for me in the other seasons. During the day I like to have the Dyson Humidifier on after I’ve showered and moisturized my skin while I’m working. Staring at a computer screen all day can make my eyes feel a little dry at times so I also love that the Dyson Humidifier helps to soothe them. I’m also going to LOVE that come spring—I thankfully don’t get severe allergies like I used to, but from time to time dry eyes can be an issue for me.
Though I sometimes use the Dyson Humidifier during the day (it also doubles as a fan for warmer temps), at night is when I REALLY use it. I’ve discussed a bunch of times in my skincare posts that the skin goes through a self-repairing process while we sleep—that’s another really important reason to get the required amount of sleep each night. But it’s also important to follow a regular nighttime skincare regimen (daytime is important too of course—they work hand-in-hand) because as we sleep the skin pulls from its surface looking for nutrients to aid in the repair process. Moisture is SUPER important in this process because it’s what our skin needs the most. Think about how you need to water plants in order for them to bloom and thrive. Obviously we get a good amount of that from moisturizers, but the humid environment created by the Dyson Humidifier can help retain a lot of that moisture AND it has health benefits as it pertains to winter colds and allergies. #WIN
So after I take my nighttime shower (resisting the urge to use water that’s too warm which can dry out the skin) I do my nighttime skin routine (cleanse, treat, moisturize). I assess my hair and see if I need to add any oils or moisturizers and then I wrap it in a silk or satin scarf. It’s really easy to fill the Dyson Humidifier with water and the design is super sleek so you won’t have any spillage mishaps (not even if you’re super clumsy like me). It’s also very quiet. I’ve found that as I get older I’m more sensitive to sound—like if I’m shopping and they put loud music on, I need to leave immediately because I can’t think straight…lol. But it’s great that the Dyson Humidifier is quiet—soothing even—because who wants to go to bed with all that racket? lol. The Dyson Humidifier has the Quiet Mark, the international mark of approval from the Noise Abatement Society. This basically means it’s great for grouchy noise-sensitive adults like myself…lol. NICE.
More things to know:
Unlike other humidifiers, the Dyson Humidifier is the only one with Intelligent Climate Control that measures both temperature and humidity to always create a comfortable, hygienic environment. I liked that with the little enclosed remote control, you can adjust the temperature and the intensity of the device even from across the room—perfect for when I wake up in the middle of the night and need a temperature adjustment without having to move much…lol. The Dyson Humidifier uses Air Multiplier™ technology for even distribution and Dyson’s own ultraviolet light technology to kill 99.9% of bacteria in water and doubles as a fan for year round use.
And for those looking for skin-related stats, here’s some findings from a recent Skin Health Alliance Survey:
* 9 out of 10 dermatologists surveyed* are humidifier users/owners
* 9 out of 10 dermatologists surveyed* recommend a humidifier for dry skin
* 9 out of 10 dermatologists surveyed* recommend a humidifier as part of a healthy skin care routine
* 9 out of 10 dermatologists surveyed* think that the correct indoor humidity is important for healthy skin
* A humidifier that is 99.9% bacteria-free is important to 99% of dermatologists surveyed*
* A humidifier that has indoor even room humidification is important to 99% of dermatologists surveyed*
*Based on results of a Skin Health Alliance survey completed by dermatologists attending the World Congress of Dermatology in June 2015.
The Dyson Humidifier is also pretty stylish-looking. It fits right into any home decor.
My thoughts on the Dyson Humidifier:
I take immaculate care of my skin so my results after using it thus far are more subtle—but if you haven’t been so kind to your skin you’ll notice a drastic change. My hair feels more supple and thankfully I didn’t experience reversion. I’m going to continue using this in my beauty routine—I’m excited to see the effects it’ll have on my hair in say six months from now. Both my hair and skin THRIVE in humid climates (any time I travel to someplace tropical I LOVE the way they look and feel) so this will definitely be as much a part of my routine as cleansing and moisturizing.
I love the feeling of conditioning of my skin and hair whenever it’s on—and that’s the only way I know it’s on because it’s seriously so quiet…lol. I do wish I could make the temperature a little higher than 70 degrees for days when it’s still a little cool out but I don’t need the heat on in my apartment. I like to feel a little like I’m on a tropical island…lol.
