Color correctors can be awesome products, BUT do understand that most people likely don’t need them. There have been many advancements in concealer shades as well as improvements to full coverage foundation formulas (many are now SO much lighter in feel than their predecessors—check out the BECCA Ultimate Coverage foundation for instance) that many folks won’t have a need for a corrector in your makeup routine. But as someone who takes her job of testing beauty products VERY seriously (haha), I’m pretty open to being the guinea pig trying stuff and reporting back on my thoughts.
The basic idea behind color correctors is to color correct—DUH. LOL. No but seriously, some of us have things like dark under eye circles, hyperpigmentation, vitiligo, etc that the inclusion of a good color corrector can work wonders for. You put your color corrector on first and then apply your foundation (or concealer if you’re doing a look that skips foundation) over that. Alternatively you could mix a little of the corrector into your foundation and then apply that—do whatever works and looks best for you. There’s more than one way to skin a cat BUT applying a color corrector OVER any type of base will probably make you mad and late for wherever you have to go.
There’s a host of colors that correct things like sallowness, redness, etc. but for the sake of this post we’ll talk about correcting dark (in color) areas that tend to occur in women of color. But if you’re curious as to which other colors correct what, check out this post I wrote YEAAAAARS ago (info is still good…lol).
Orange is a color typically used to correct darkness (under the eyes, discoloration, dark spots, etc.) typically in darker skin tones. You can also use a concealer that’s more golden (or in some cases red) in undertone to “cancel” out the darkness. I recently picked up two orange correctors to review: NYX Full Coverage Orange Concealer and LA Girl Orange Corrector.
The NYX Full Coverage Orange Concealer is a cream formula and as the name would suggest, it’s full coverage. It can be manipulated very well once it warms to the skin and covers dark spots well. If you’re about my skin tone or darker, you might feel like this shade isn’t a deep enough orange. If you’re more of an olive to golden brown color, this might be better suited for you. I’d also say this works better if you use a makeup tool to scoop some out and then you can use your fingers or a concealer brush (or a fluffy eyeshadow brush like the MAC #217) or beautyblender. The little pot is a little narrow but not impossible to work with, but you might find it easier to dispense the way I just mentioned.
The LA Girl Orange Corrector though is a more vibrant orange (which worked better for my complexion) and for me was the better formula of the two. Too much product can dispense if you’re not careful squeezing the tube so I’d suggest still using a brush or your fingers with this as opposed to the built-in applicator for better control. I liked how this performed and IF I used color correctors in my routine, I’d prefer the LA Girl one. But it doesn’t do any better of a job than what I currently use so I wouldn’t want an extra step in my routine.

Bottom line: In short, I don’t believe many folks NEED a color corrector but if you’re about my complexion and feel you do AND you’re choosing between this NYX one and this LA Girl one, go for the LA Girl one…lol.
You can typically find NYX and LA Girl at beauty supply stores and online at various retailers. You can also buy from their respective websites: nyxcosmetics.com and lagirlusa.com.
I’ve tried both of these. I have a little discoloration from acne scars (going away, yay!) and a little around my mouth. LA Girl is far superior. NYX wasn’t orange enough for me and the NYX was a bit harder to manipulate and blend in. You suggest the right choice!
Wonderful post! I ended up buying both of these to cover up some hyperpigmentation on my cheeks. I had both of these and I tossed the Nyx one. The Nyx one was so hard to blend because it was so thick! I love the LA girl orange colour corrector a lot.
Nice :/
L.a girl wins hands down
anyone else love this post as much as me ? :)
My favorite color corrector is by MAC. I like the highlighter pen in peach lustre (just enough orange for me) and when I want to go all out I use the orange in their concealer pallet for darker skin.
I have tried the la girls orange corrector but i didn’t like it. Maybe i think i put to much on that when i applied my foundation and tried to blend it i looked like a pumpkin!!! Im going to give it another try.
