Listen, these last three months have either given us the time and energy to try out new hairstyles or they have given us the space to not bother doing anything at all—and I am NOT mad at either one. I feel like I’ve lived on both fences since we’ve not been able to get to hair salons. Some days I’ll do a cute half-up, half-down style to film videos and others it stays for daaaaays in the four braids I create after washing my hair to keep it stretched as it air dries…lol.
Either way I need to make sure I have the proper foundation to allow my hair to thrive whether I’m being a kitchen beautician or trying to set a new world record for how long I can keep my bonnet on my head. This way I can flex and have a great hair day whether my hair is out or braided up underneath a wig.
Pantene has been a staple for my maintenance routine for the longest time now. I have thick 4C hair and we all know how important moisture is for retaining our precious kinks. For everything I put my hair through: the blowdrying, the detangling, the manipulation, etc., my hair is like “Gurl, I need MOISTURE, MOISTURE, MOISTURE.” I recently added the Pantene Pro-V Daily Moisture Renewal Shampoo and Pantene Pro-V Daily Moisture Renewal Conditioner from the Daily Moisture Renewal Collection to my routine and after washing and conditioning, I CANNOT keep my hands out of my hair (except I keep my hands out of my hair because we’re on a low manipulation kick here, OK?!).
I have to say my balance of cute slicked up hairstyles, cutting back on the heat (I try to blow dry very little now and you’d be proud of how long it’s been since I last picked up a flat iron) combined with my hands-off completely days has helped me to retain hair length while left to my own devices in quarantine. I just KNOW Gabi (my friend and hairstylist) will be proud when I finally go to the salon in my hazmat suit to get a trim and rinse to cover the greys sprouting up in my part and front of my head. Like why do they have to sprout up in such ignorant places? SHEESH.
Anyway, Pantene Daily Moisture Renewal Collection helps to transform dry, brittle hair to smooth, shiny, resilient hair while helping to prevent up to 90% of future styling and heat damage. This is right up my alley. My hair feels even softer and even more hydrated after using it. I’m over here living my best hair life.
But enough about me, here are some bulleted points to summarize how you, too, can keep more hair on your head:
- Try low manipulation hairstyles. The less you aggravate the hair by pulling it, combing, brushing, and heat styling, the more it will be able to thrive. This is especially true when it comes to my own 4C hair.
- Nourish the hair with the right foundation. Listen, I can’t say enough how important moisture is to curly hair but especially to tightly coiled 4C hair like mine.
- Go for routine trims and/or haircuts. I’ve been natural since 2010 and I have learned a thing or two in this time about my hair and how my lifestyle affects it. One of my biggest mistakes was not cutting my hair into a cute style when I was in the TWA stage. I was loving the wash and gos, but then I got bored and quickly found myself back in straight weaves that meant using heat to get my leave-out to blend. If I had a cute haircut, it would have encouraged me to wear my hair in its natural state more.
- Making use of the right protective styles. I love to throw on a u-part wig or a full wig to increase my styling options while keeping my own hair protected. But I used to wear blown straight weaves with a small amount of my hair left out like it was my job. That lead to a lot of manipulation on my leave-out which also led to damage which meant part of my hair wouldn’t curl like the rest of it if I tried to wear it out. Now I’ve become one with kinky curl hair extensions and wigs from Big Chop Hair that match my 4C hair texture.
